You've heard of a guard dog, but have you ever heard of a guard llama? Although llamas can be used to guard many different animals, they are usually used to look after sheep. Llamas don't like to be on their own so, if a young llama is placed with a flock of sheep, it soon makes friends with the sheep. Then, If a dog or a fox comes near its 'friends', the llama will try to drive it away. If the animal is silly enough to come too close to the llama it will probably get kicked. Llamas make good guards because they are happy to stay with a flock of sheep all the time. Dogs would get fed up after a while and want to do something else. Also, because llamas eat the same food as the sheep, the farmer doesn't have to bring special food to the field. Can you think of any other reasons why llamas might make good guards? |
